What's the difference between Marketing, Public Relations and Advertising

1. Marketing

Marketing is the overall strategy a business uses to promote and sell products or services. It includes research, planning, and communication to reach the right audience.

  • Goal: Drive sales and grow the business.

  • Tools: Ads, social media campaigns, email marketing, SEO, promotions, events, and more.

  • Example: A company researches its audience, creates a campaign, and posts social media ads to promote a new product.

2. Public Relations (PR)

Public Relations focuses on building and maintaining a positive image for a brand, company, or individual. It’s about reputation and relationships with the public and media.

  • Goal: Create trust, credibility, and a favorable image.

  • Tools: Press releases, media relations, events, influencer partnerships, and crisis management.

  • Example: A company issues a press release about a charity initiative to show it supports the community.

3. Advertising

Advertising is a paid form of marketing communication used to promote products, services, or ideas. It’s usually controlled by the brand because you pay for placement.

  • Goal: Drive awareness, interest, and sales.

  • Tools: TV, radio, print, social media ads, Google Ads, banners, and sponsored content.

  • Example: A brand runs a paid Instagram ad campaign for a new product.
